“The Texture of Light: A Fashion Imaging Experiment Between Silk and Painting” with Photographer JK Wong, written by Zhuangzixin

From the article:

“Light and color are never passive backgrounds, but rather an integral part of the style. In this photographic work, photographer JK WONG re-weaves fashion, portraiture, painting, and light into a new narrative space in an almost experimental way. The background is taken from a painting by American artist Robert Standish. To break away from the flatness of conventional paper backgrounds, JK chose to re-expose the abstract painting onto silk. The luster and softness of the silk give the abstract language, originally belonging to the canvas, a flowing texture, as if it can breathe in front of the lens. When the model stands in this space surrounded by color, the image itself is pushed into an ambiguous state between fashion and art installation.”

The “Agau” Corset and Corset Skirt in double sided Italian silk satin

“JK stated that the core of this series is to juxtapose different artistic languages in an equal manner: the paintings are not backgrounds but part of the subject; fashion is not passively presented but recreated by light. In the creative process, she tends to regard each exposure as an act of "on-site generation" rather than a pure reproduction. Through multiple light trails, reflections, and the subtle refraction of silk, the images present a texture like the surface of water, with a rhythm like breathing.”

The “Chantara” in ombré sun ray pleated lamé milled in Italy

“JK chose "light painting" as her primary lighting strategy. Each image is not a single exposure, but rather a precise "painting" of light onto the canvas in darkness. This method elevates light beyond a mere illumination tool, allowing it to intervene in the visual structure with a more organic and unpredictable brushstroke. Light flows like liquid through the texture of silk, leaving irregular marks on the model's form. These uncertainties resonate with the energy of abstract painting, creating a tension between chaos and order in the images.”

The “Stardust” Gown and matching Lingerie Set in Italian embroidery

“From the models' poses to the choice of clothing, everything is designed to respond to the abstract language of the environment: transparent, metallic, stiff, or flowing fabrics, under the influence of light, produce different reflections and shadows, as if vibrating in sync with the color layers of the background. Each piece is like a "sculpture of light" captured in a fleeting moment, brief yet concrete.”

“This series of works is not just an extension of fashion photography, but more like a question about the boundaries of images: Can fashion be juxtaposed with contemporary art? Can light become a narrative element as important as clothing? With her consistent high-end fashion visual language, JK creates a dramatic and poetic visual field through experiments with technology, materials and light, which also shows her ambition and maturity in cross-disciplinary image creation.”
